JUDGE’S COMMENTS AND WINNERS

PEOPLES’ CHOICE: Barbara Bennett “Gathered for Gramdma”
RUNNER-UP PEOPLES’ CHOICE: Robin St Louis “I Know You”

JUDGE: Joe Garcia, Jullian, California

PROCESS: I enjoyed jurying this show, it was an honor and pleasure. It was refreshing to see a wide variety of ideas and techniques. My first thought was to walk thru and get an overall feeling of what is presented. I look for strong ideas and competent use of technique. I base a lot of my jurying on composition, harmonious use of color, and use of the medium.

BEST OF SHOW: Artist: Robin St Louis Name of Painting: I Know You
It really caught the essence of the show, well composed, told a story, nice transparent watercolor.

FIRST PLACE: Artist: Barbara Bennett Name of Painting: Grandma
Very nice composition, technically handled well, reads really well, nice lights and darks.

SECOND PLACE: Artist: Rhoda Katz Name of Painting: Apples and Tulips
Nicely composed, good design quality and carries the essence of watercolors. Well done.

THIRD PLACE: Artist: Bonnie Kondor Name of Painting: Mardi Gras I
I like the way it’s cropped, nice design, nicely done, well handled.

FOURTH PLACE: Artist: Barbara Bennett Name of Painting: Red Hibiscus

Tom Lynch Demonstrator for March 9th Meeting

Tom Lynch has been referred to as one of the nation’s premier water-colorists. He has written seven books and hosted several award-winning PBS Art Series. He is a natural teacher, speaking openly and candidly. His paintings have that same intensity, expression and direct appeal. His unique style is truly an adventure in color, contrast and light.

Tom feels it’s the artist’s job to bring the viewer the best of what can be found in a landscape along with a little creativity or exaggeration.

He likes to provoke viewers to “have something to think about, not
just something to see.”Especially for our meeting, Tom will demonstrate how to rescue some of our members’ “failures.” The meeting may run
a little longer than 9PM, but will be well worth it. Because of Tom’s popularity and limited space, no guests are allowed. This is a MEMBERS ONLY meeting.

CVWS CookBook Celebrating 20 years 2009

Clonard Thomas's artwork (Before the Pie") adorns the cover of our new cookbook.

The Coachella Valley Watercolor Society has compiled a treasury of tasty dishes for their 20th Anniversary. The idea was spawned over a year ago by then President Kathy Dunham. Chairman Connie Collins worked diligently gathering recipes from the artist members, typing them and of course doing a little taste testing along the way. Jean Denning and Kathy Dunham also lent Connie a hand with proof reading and photography of the art that graces the cover and index pages. All images are watercolor paintings done by members. Copies will be available for sale at the Society's Annual Member Show March 7th & 8th, 2009 at the Palm Desert Community Center on San Pablo behind City Hall, through members and at "Kitchen Kitchen" 74921 Hwy 111, Indian Wells. The price of the cookbook is $16.00 per copy.
